20 Dec Being Spirit-Filled is Like a Kite on a Windy Day
Acts 2:1-4 – When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
When Grace and I were a young married couple and our kids were very little, we didn’t have a lot of money so, one winter, someone let us use their beach house on the coast near where we lived. The only problem was it was the dead of winter, which isn’t exactly the ideal time for the beach.
We bundled up the kids in giant puffy coats, hats, and gloves, and tried to head out to the beach. The beach, however, had other plans. It felt like 50 mph winds and like being sandblasted in the face by icicles. Not the ideal family vacation.
But, since I’m the dad that always has fun on the calendar and takes upon myself the responsibility of making everything fun for my family, I had to come up with a plan. So, I figured we should visit the local kite shop.
I can still just picture my very young daughter holding her kite and looking at it, then looking up at me, seemingly unamused with this piece of cheap plastic. However, suddenly, the wind caught the kite and shot it up into the air before it flew back and forth all around us. Thankfully my daughter was wearing puffy gloves; otherwise, her hand would’ve been likely cut off by how quickly the string unwound for the kite to take flight.
This is similar to what happened in the book of Acts when the Holy Spirit first descended on the church, and what happens when the Holy Spirit indwells a believer today. God the Holy Spirit gives us both power and passion that is unmatched and unrivaled by any excitement the world can provide us.
Think about a kite and how this is similar to the way the Holy Spirit indwells and empowers those of us who are believers in Christ.
