What should a child-grandparent relationship be like?

This question comes from a gal and her husband who are struggling with where the boundary should be for grandparents. The grandparents go against rules and wishes of the parents and they don’t want to totally cut off the relationship, but are trying to figure out the best course of action to continue relationship, if possible.
