Christ Died For Our Sins (1 Corinthians 15:3)

– The Bible gives few details about crucifixion, ancient world saw.

  • “an emblem of suffering & shame”
  • Tertullian chose cross as the symbol of Christianity
  • Crucifixion is state sponsored terror
  • When Jesus a boy in 4 AD mass crucifixion of Jews for uprising against Rome
  • In 71 BC when Spartacus died in battle 6000 followers crucified along 120 miles

Crucifixion

  • Impailing started with Persians around 800 BC
  • Romans perfected
  • Stipe (permanent post) & patibulum (the crossbar).
  • Death by asphyxiation took as long as 9 days
  • Public like beheadings

Excruciating = “from the cross”

3. Deut. 21:22–23 “if a man…is put to death, & you hang him on a tree… a hanged man is cursed by God.”

Jesus Crucifixion

  • Blindfolded & beaten all night
  • Scourged – flogged w/flagrum or cat-o-nine tails
    • Skin, muscle, tendon, bones, lungs bruised
    • Shock, blood loss, heart strained
    • Rib fly off body
  • Crown of thorns
  • Carry 100lb cross for miles
  • Collapsed, chest trauma
    • Chest contusion & aneurysm, lungs filling carbon monoxide
    • Like head on car crash
  • Pulled bear, spit, cursed
  • Nailed nerve centers
  • Mary
  • Breathed last, spear under rib cage, burial wrappings, tomb, soldier = Christ died

For Our Sins

Bible – rebellion, folly, self-abuse, madness, treason, death, hatred, spiritual adultery, missing the mark, wandering from the path, idolatry, insanity, irrationality, pride, selfishness, blindness, deafness, a hard heart, a stiff neck, delusion, unreasonable, and self-worship.

  1. Condition – who you are (Nature, Desire, Motive, Will)
  2. Action – what you do (Thought, Word, Deed, Emotion)

1. Conscience (internal) & 2. Law (external)  3. Death = restrain us

=? Everyone no limits or consequences? 

Penal Substitutionary atonement

  1. Penalty – physical & spiritual death
  2. Substitution
  3. Great Exchange  – “FOR”

OT & Lev. Day of Atonement “at one meant”

Either Christ is punished for you, or you are punished by Christ
