23 Dec 6 Reasons Jesus Was Born: #4 Jesus Came Down to Lift Us Up
We live in a world where it seems everyone wants to go up and get more. We want to go up our class rankings in school to get more awards, we want to go up the organizational chart at work to make more money, we want to go up in income so we can get more stuff, and we want to go up the ladder at church to get more influence.
In a world where everyone is going up to get more, the birth of Jesus that we celebrate every Christmas is staggering as He came down to have less. Jesus literally traded everything for nothing.
Speaking of the Spirit of Jesus that should be the Spirit of Christmas, Philippians 2:5-11 says, “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
The reason we exalt Jesus with the biggest birthday party in world history is because He humbled himself. The reason we love Jesus so much is because He gave up so much to do what was best for us even though it was worst for Him.
The best gift we get every Christmas is the grace of our humble God, Jesus Christ. In response, the best way to honor Christ at Christmas is to humble ourselves, consider the needs of others, and serve them as He serves us.
What exactly does that look like for you this Christmas season? What would a humble holiday look like? Who is closest to you that would benefit from you considering their needs and serving them?
