08 Sep Born Again (Part 1): What does it mean to be born again?
It is common for Christians to speak of being “born again.” Admittedly, the language can be confusing.
When a baby is born, there is a sense of wonder, awe, and joy at the presence of life. And, when someone is born again, there should be a similar response at the presence of spiritual life.
Theologically speaking, regeneration is the biblical teaching that salvation includes God’s work both for us at the cross of Jesus, and in us by the Holy Spirit. Or to say it another way, regeneration is not a separate work of the Holy Spirit added to the saving work of Jesus; rather, it is the subjective actualization of Jesus’ work.
While the word regeneration appears only twice in the Bible1, it is described in both the Old and New Testaments by a constellation of images. Before we examine them in the coming days, it is important to note that each signifies a permanent, unalterable change in someone at his or her deepest level.
Are you born again? If so, what are the biggest changes you have experienced since being born again?
