23 Dec Church in Your Home
Hebrews 13:15–16 – “Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”
Growing up, the way I understood church attendance was that your church is your church, and your home is your home. To me, this meant that you do Bible reading, prayer, and singing at church, but this isn’t something you necessarily bring home with you. I think a lot of people probably have the same mistaken notion.
Several months ago, there was a family that started attending Trinity Church after the invitation from a friend and they had some shocking revelations about worship upon attending service. They grew up with a view of church like mine growing up and were shocked to find out you could do many of the same things at home that you can do at church.
At church, there’s a band and the congregation sings together, the pastor opens his Bible and teaches from the Word of God, and there is prayer. The family had no idea you could take these practices home with you.
So, we had the opportunity to give them a Bible and some months later, they said they’re actually reading it in their home together, they’re singing and worshipping in the car together, and they’re even praying together as a family. This is awesome! This is the endzone for how a family should work – worshipping, reading the Bible, and praying together.
This family had been going to church all their life but had never brought church home with them. How many of you feel the same way?
If you’ve never or rarely worshipped, prayed, and read the Bible together as a family, set routines to do this together regularly. If you’re already doing this, keep going!
