15 Nov Don’t Drive into the Lake
James 4:13-14a – Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”—yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring.
I recently heard a story that also reminds me of an episode of The Office about two ladies who were following their GPS. They followed the directions so specifically, in fact, that when the GPS clearly glitched and told them to drive straight into a lake, they did!
This is a funny story, but it illustrates the difference between process and pivot leadership. Especially in the crazy past 18 months, we’ve clearly been able to clearly see those who are process leaders and those who are pivot leaders.
The people in the car driving straight into the lake would be a great example of process leaders. They make a plan, and they stick to it, no matter what variables come into play or what direction they’re headed. Pivot leaders, on the other hand, make a plan but make adjustments to said plan as needed. For pivot leaders, a plan is most likely on paper, but it’s all written in pencil.
As Proverbs 19:21 says, “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” It’s not a bad idea to make a plan, but it is a bad idea to make a plan without, first, asking for God’s wisdom and, second, recognizing that plans are subject to change.
Do you believe that God will provide for you as you trust in Him? Whatever change God may be calling you to is of infinitely higher value than the cost of what you long to hold onto. Do you believe this? Why or why not?
