Jesus’ Death Was Like a Seed in a Cup

John 12:23-26 And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

Do you remember the first time you planted something as a child? I can still remember as a little kid putting a seed in a cup, burying it in dirt, pouring a bit of water over it, and then placing it near a window. Each day, I would wake up and run to that cup to see what was happening. For days, nothing happened. Then, one morning I gazed into the cup to see the dirt pushed to the side as a green bud began pushing itself up toward the sun determined to emerge from its grave to life.

Jesus says that His life is like that. Days before His death, Jesus teaches us that like a seed buried in the dirt, He would come forth in newness of life. His death and resurrection were the beginning of new life for all of God’s people.

One day, you too will die. Like the seed in my cup, your body will be buried in the dirt. Then, one day, your body will burst forth from the dirt in newness of life fully healed from sickness, sin, and sadness forever. For this reason, Paul tells the Corinthians that when a believer dies that their body is “sown” just like the seed in my cup.

Who are you most looking to a reunion with upon the resurrection of the dead?
