04 Dec My Wife Would Kill Me If I Had Faith Like Abraham
Romans 4:20-22 – No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.”
One common misreading of the Bible is to overlook the faults, failures, and flaws of the giants of our faith. The result is that we see them more like superheroes than sinners.
This error is particularly true of Abraham. Throughout Scripture, including Romans, he is presented as the father of faith. While Abraham had real faith, he did not have perfect faith.
He gave away the Promised Land God gave Him. Thankfully God brought it back.
He gave away the promised wife God gave him…twice. Thankfully, God brought her back…twice.
He got a second wife pregnant instead of waiting more years for God to give him a son. Thankfully, God gave him the promised son.
Like every husband, my wife would kill me if I gave our house away once, and gave her away twice, and got a second wife pregnant! The last thing she would do is write a book and go on a speaking tour to tell the world her husband was a man of incredible faith.
Abraham’s faith walk reminds me a lot of a baby who stumbles and wobbles as they learn to walk. Thankfully, God looks at his wobbly walk with grace and does the same for us. This explains why we are told that Abraham had “no unbelief”, did not “waver”, was “fully convinced”, and “grew strong”.
Our faith is not perfect, but God, the object of our faith, is perfectly faithful. That is the encouraging and hopeful story of Abraham, who is the father of our faith.
