Lost and Found: Finding God’s Power (Romans 1:8–17) Sermon Notes

Pray

Romans 1:First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in all the world. For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I mention you 10 always in my prayers, asking that somehow by God’s will I may now at last succeed in coming to you.

  • Prayer – silent, spoken, written, sung = w/o ceasing
  • Prayer builds relationship 1. w/God   2. w/others
  • Thanksgiving – kneel & pray

Plan

Romans 1:11 For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you— 12 that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine. 13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I have often intended to come to you (but thus far have been prevented), in order that I may reap some harvest among you as well as among the rest of the Gentiles. 14 I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish.

Jesus is for everybody

  1. Greeks & non-Greeks/barbarians = all nations.
  2. Wise & foolish = all classes.

= Paul plan – get to Rome for partnership & get to Spain (15:22-29)

2 Kinds of Leaders – 1). Thought (open Bibles learn) 2). People (open lives love)

  • Scottsdale first then see next options (Sat. 6pm)

Preach

Romans 1:15 So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

Preach! The gospel = Jesus is Lord

God’s plan for people to realize their righteousness & receive Jesus’ righteousness!

  1. The gospel is public because Jesus is Lord of all and not just your heart
  2. The public nature of the gospel is what causes the conflicts
  3. You cannot see the gospel. You must hear it. Good deeds vs good news.

Righteousness of God: phrase 8X Romans (1:17; 3:5, 21, 22, 25, 26; 10:3 [2x]), + terms

  1. Who God is – righteous
  2. Who we are – the unrighteous

= ?How do you become right w/God?

the civilised races of man will almost certainly exterminate, and replace, the savage races throughout the world.”

Thomas Malthus (1766-1834)

  • Took Darwinian evolutionary theory to its’ logical conclusion
  • Falsely assuming overpopulation and scarcity resources requires population controls including sterilization, birth control, and abortion for the less fit

Nazi Germany – applied Darwin and Malthus as a governmental and social experiment
