Romans 8:1 (NLT) – So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.

Have you ever done something or had something done to you that you wish wasn’t a part of your life story? You are not alone. We all have parts of our life story that the Enemy wants to use to shame us, condemn us, and isolate us with. If you have had an abortion, whether you chose it or someone chose it for you, whether you knew what you were doing or you are just realizing the tragic facts…Jesus has healing, not condemnation, for you. There is not a sin that His death on the cross didn’t cover. It’s not the unpardonable sin. As a pastor’s kid and a pastor’s wife, I have listened to and cried with many women during their healing process who have previously had abortions. I’ve been the first person some women have told. There have been tens of millions of abortions which means tens of millions of women have emotional (and often physical) pain, whether they acknowledge it or not. I have heard the guilt of “How could I have done that?”, “I can never forgive myself”, “How could God forgive me?”, “Why didn’t anyone tell me what it really was?”, “I thought there was no other option”, and “My boyfriend said I had to.” These are all heartbreaking feelings that women hold on to for years, as the shame tells them they are alone and unforgivable.

Grieving the loss and working through the pain of taking your baby’s life can be a daunting thought. Isn’t keeping it a secret easier? Isn’t numbing the feelings and moving on the best solution? It won’t affect the rest of my life, right? I wish the answer could be a simple yes and you could move on. But just like any sin or brokenness in our life, if we don’t work through it with the Lord (and healthy Christian community), it will be a dark place in our soul that keeps popping up and brings anxiety, doubt, anger, and insecurity, rather than freedom, forgiveness, joy, and confidence in God’s love for us. God doesn’t love us for what we do or not do, He loves us because He created us in His image and wants an abundant life for us. We are not saved by our good works, and if we love Jesus, we aren’t condemned for our bad works either. Forgiveness is a powerful process that offers freedom from past, present, and future sins…all done by Jesus’ death on the cross and resurrection which brings us new life! The world has lied to us, but God gives us truth that sets us free. I encourage you to ask Jesus to walk this healing path with you. Grab a journal, your Bible, and some Kleenex. Pray and start writing your story and whatever comes to mind. Be honest about the pain, the lies, and the feelings that emerge. Ask God to forgive you, heal you, and take the condemnation of the Enemy from you, and this will start the process of grieving and walking in freedom! In case you’re wondering, Jesus has already forgiven you, but we have to take the steps to WALK IN FORGIVENESS. You are loved by the God who created you! The promise of Hebrews 4:16 (NLT) is for you, “So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” Lastly, a godly Christian counselor filled with the Spirit who will pray for you and walk with you could be a big part of your healing journey. I would also recommend the following resource to help with your healing: “Surrendering the Secret: Healing the Heartbreak of Abortion”, by Patricia Layton. You are loved by the God who created you, and in Him you are a new creation!
